As the Nazis gain popularity life becomes increasingly dangerous for the Hamburg Theatre Company with its troupe of Jewish and socialist actors. When Hendrik is offered the lead role of Mephisto in a production of Faust, he is forced to choose between his company and his lover, his career and his integrity: whether to sell his soul for the chance to star at the Berlin Opera House.
