Jane and Kev don’t have secrets, there’s no room for them. Their daughters Jess and Betty take up all the space. Dirty laundry, chaotic mealtimes and fending off questions about hairy fannies and the existence of hell are all squeezed in together, leaving little room for romance.
The couple’s weekend guests are Kev’s best mate Phil, charmer and eternal bachelor, and his self-confessed “three-year-long one-night stand” Lorna, an attractive but high-maintenance handbag designer who smokes, shops and is revolted by the histrionics of Phil’s scatty suburban friends.
But when Kev comes home from a business trip with something on his mind, he starts a confessional chain reaction which has shattering consequences. It swiftly transpires that love, in the context of sex, friendship and parenthood, is not what it seems.
Written by award winning playwright and actress Amelia Bullmore and greeted with rave reviews on its debut at the Bush Theatre in 2005, Mammals is a bitterly comic glimpse of the breeding generation. For anyone who’s in, has ever been in, or will ever be in a family.
